Description: Examines co-occurring disorders from the bio-psycho-social model. Includes causes, consequences, assessment, and treatment, emphasizing the psychoeducational model of treatment.

1. Review diagnostic categories of the major serious mental illnesses and describe characteristic symptoms of each. (I)
2. Review approaches to intervention and treatment of co-occurring disorders. (II)
3. Identify signs and symptoms of addictions and substance abuse for persons with co-occurring disorders. (I, II, III)
4. Explain the recovery process of persons with co-occurring disorders. (II)
5. Describe factors that increase and decrease the likelihood of relapse for persons with co-occurring disorders. (II)
6. Name local agencies, facilities, and groups that provide support and/or treatment for persons with co-occurring disorders. (II)
7. Describe the problems in assessing persons with co-occurring disorders. (II, III)
8. Compare and contrast different treatment approaches for persons with co-occurring disorders. (II, III)
9. Describe special issues that may arise in when treating persons with co-occurring disorders. (II, III)
