Description: Introduction to construction trades with an overview of standard practices in the construction profession, including safety, construction drawings, tools, and material handling. Includes workspace maintenance according to professional standards and basic calculation skills in the construction environment, including primary operations. Examines the United States standard and metric units of measurement, orthographic figures, and area and volume calculations for two and three-dimensional objects. Provides students with the information and skills to read and understand construction drawing. Includes basic rigging and material handling procedures.



MCCCD Official Course Competencies
1. Demonstrate basic safety procedures and the selection of appropriate safety equipment for use of specific hand tools, power tools, and equipment. (I-IV)
2. Properly maintain workspace, store hand tools, power tools and equipment according to industry standards. (II-IV)
3. Effectively operate appropriate hand tools, power tools and equipment for a specific task. (II, III)
4. Apply mathematical skills to solve construction problems. (V)
5. Demonstrate proficiency and accuracy in measurements using a standard ruler, metric ruler, and measuring tape. (V)
6. Convert units of length, weight, volume, and temperature between the United States standard and metric systems of measurement. (V)
7. Explain the metric system as it relates to the construction trades. (V)
8. Effectively use a construction scale employing an understanding of mathematical operations. (VI)
9. Interpret various types of construction drawings, including their fundamental components and features. (VI)
10. Identify construction methods and materials described in various types of construction drawings. (VI)
11. Apply various symbols, terms, abbreviations, and drawing conventions to various types of construction working drawings. (VI)
12. Define basic rigging in construction trades including the movement of materials from one place to another using various types of lifting gear. (VII)
13. Demonstrate proper material handling procedures. (VIII)
14. Effectively communicate with stakeholders. (IX)
