Description: Introduction to the history and principles of safe patient handling and mobility (SPHM). Introduction to patient mobility bedside assessment. Use of safe patient handling equipment and principles for in-bed movement, transfers to and from stretchers and chairs, exercise, and safe ambulation. Use of equipment for home care. Review and application of body mechanics.



MCCCD Official Course Competencies
1. Describe the principles of safe patient handling and mobility (SPHM). (I)
2. Perform bedside mobility assessment. (II)
3. Demonstrate the use of proper body mechanics during patient care. (II-IX)
4. Safely utilize SPHM equipment to move a patient in a bed, stretcher, and chair in all settings. (III-VI)
5. Safely utilize SPHM equipment for ambulation and therapeutic exercise. (VII-VIII)
6. Participate in a floor rescue. (IX)
