Description: Introduction to the International Classification of Diseases, Procedure Coding System (ICD-PCS). Topics include application of the current ICD-PCS guidelines and conventions for procedures in inpatient settings and coding technologies.



MCCCD Official Course Competencies
1. Describe the purpose, history and organization of the International Classification of Diseases - Procedure Coding System (ICD-PCS). (I)
2. Describe the current ICD-PCS code structures and design. (I)
3. Identify additional characteristics, applications, and resources provided in the current ICD-PCS. (I)
4. Assign and appropriately sequence medical and surgical root operation codes. (II, III, VI)
5. Assign and appropriately sequence medical and surgical related procedure codes. (II, IV, VI)
6. Assign and appropriately sequence ancillary procedure codes. (II, V, VI)
7. Describe the framework and capabilities of selected computer-assisted coding and encoder software programs, and other technology resources. (VII)
8. Use ethical coding practices and current ICD-CM/PCS guidelines to accurately code and sequence both diagnoses and procedures for inpatient cases. (VII, VIII)
