Description: Introductory course in exercise testing, to include health appraisal, risk stratification, and the selection and administration of common evidence-based assessments for apparently healthy populations.



MCCCD Official Course Competencies
1. Using participant health/medical history and industry standards for pre-participation health screening, assess participant risk for experiencing an adverse event with exercise testing. (I)
2. Demonstrate industry-accepted professional, ethical, and business standards for optimizing safety and reducing liability during exercise testing. (I, II)
3. Communicate orally, visually and in written form with peers in a manner appropriate to the field. (I, II)
4. Select common evidence-based fitness and health-related assessments appropriate to client needs and goals, and to ensure client safety. (II)
5. Conduct common evidence-based fitness and health-related assessments for an apparently healthy population according to industry standards. (II)
6. Adapt instruction of assessments to client needs and goals, and to ensure client safety. (II)
7. Interpret results of fitness and health-related assessments. (II)
8. Identify evidence-based exercise program modifications based upon interpretation of assessment results. (II)
MCCCD Official Course Competencies must be coordinated with the content outline so that each major point in the outline serves one or more competencies. MCCCD faculty retains authority in determining the pedagogical approach, methodology, content sequencing, and assessment metrics for student work. I. Initial client consultation
   A. Health/medical history, pre-participation screening tools, and informed consent
   B. Guidelines for risk stratification
   C. Industry-accepted recommendations for medical clearance and testing and supervision
   D. Assessment of resting heart rate and blood pressure
II. Health-related fitness assessments
   A. Selecting and administering common assessments in:
      1. Cardiorespiratory fitness
      2. Muscular fitness
      3. Body composition
      4. Flexibility and neuromuscular fitness
   B. Relative and absolute contraindications
   C. Interpreting results for program design/modification
