Description: Introduction to building codes and the American Disabilities Act (ADA) for the built environment. Explores permitting process. Includes application of building code to a small commercial project.

MCCCD Official Course Competencies
1. Describe historical impact, processes, agencies, and professionals involved in securing a building permit through the awarding of a certificate of occupancy utilizing the IRC (International Residential Codes) and IBC (International Building Codes). (I, II)
2. Review plans for compliance to International Building Code and zoning ordinance. (II-IX)
3. Explain how the strengths of wood, steel, and concrete dictate structural uses in buildings. (III)
4. Describe the types of structural loading and typical solutions employed to counteract these loads. (III)
5. Identify soil types and their particular reaction to imposed structural loads. (III)
6. Explain how the construction types are regulated by building codes. (IV)
7. Apply occupancy classifications and occupant loads to a given design. (IV)
8. Define means of egress and enhancing or hindering factors for egress. (IV,V)
9. Produce a simple annotated plan that adheres to code. (IV-IX)
10. Modify existing space using ADA guidelines. (V, VI)
11. Identify common fire-resistant materials for building construction. (VII)
12. Describe the general code requirements for plumbing, mechanical, electrical systems and fire suppression systems. (VIII)
MCCCD Official Course Competencies must be coordinated with the content outline so that each major point in the outline serves one or more competencies. MCCCD faculty retains authority in determining the pedagogical approach, methodology, content sequencing, and assessment metrics for student work. Please see individual course syllabi for additional information, including specific course requirements.
