Description: Theory and practice of interpersonal communication skills which affect day-to-day social interactions with other persons. May include using verbal and nonverbal symbols, active listening, resolving interpersonal conflict, understanding cultural perspectives, and developing and maintaining personal and professional relationships.



MCCCD Official Course Competencies
1. Describe the process of interpersonal communication in terms of models and principles as these relate to the discipline and its central questions. (I)
2. Explain how the perception of self and others affects communication behaviors through the application and review of communication theories and practices, including the influence of beliefs, attitudes and values. (II)
3. Demonstrate effective communication problem solving and decision-making strategies necessary for constructive emotional, relational and attitudinal communication. (II)
4. Demonstrate the ability to accomplish communicative goals (self-efficacy) through effective self-disclosure, self-awareness, and self-concept in a variety of interpersonal communication settings (friendships, family, workplace, romantic partnerships). (II)
