Description: Knowledge and skills required to develop programs to reduce losses from future disasters, emergencies, and other extreme events caused by natural and man-made hazards.



MCCCD Official Course Competencies
1. Identify and describe the knowledge, skills, and abilities to manage a comprehensive emergency management program. (I-VII)
2. Analyze mitigation history, philosophy, strategy, programs, and consequences. (I-VII)
3. Define the term disaster-resistant community, and explain how communities become disaster-resistant. (III)
4. Explain the importance of risk monitoring in mitigating the severity of a disaster. (III-V)
5. Identify and describe a variety of mitigation strategies, and explain how to select the best strategy for a given situation. (IV-VI)
6. Identify and describe a variety of mitigation resources, and explain when and why the emergency manager needs to access each type of resource. (VI-VII)
MCCCD Official Course Competencies must be coordinated with the content outline so that each major point in the outline serves one or more competencies. MCCCD faculty retains authority in determining the pedagogical approach, methodology, content sequencing, and assessment metrics for student work.
