Description: Building occupant safety requirements including industry standards, regulations, building codes, fire codes and life safety codes. Fundamentals of fire protection system operation, inspection and maintenance. Principles of life safety systems including fire door and walls, smoke control systems, and exit components.

1. Explain the relationship between historic fires and fire code changes. (I)
2. Demonstrate ability to apply International Building and Fire Code to fire protection scenarios. (I-VI)
3. Explain the techniques used to restore openings and penetrations common in building construction and renovations. (III)
4. Identify International Building Code construction types. (IV)
5. Evaluate occupancies to determine if smoke control systems are required. (V)
6. Collaborate with peers to solve problems in special systems and codes. (V)
7. Work with a team to solve a fire protection problem. (V-VII)
8. Calculate occupancy load and egress components using the International Building Code. (VI)
9. Describe fire exit system components. (VI)
10. Explain the principle operation of water-based sprinkler systems. (VII)
11. Describe the characteristics of an Underwriters` Laboratory (UL) listed fire alarm system. (VIII)
