Description: Introduction to the field of developmental disability assistance. Also includes common causes of developmental disabilities, treatments and other behavioral conditions that may affect such individuals.



MCCCD Official Course Competencies
1. Describe common developmental disabilities and their causes. (I)
2. Define the state, and Federal standards for care and service of individuals with developmental disabilities. (II)
3. Explain the basic principles and implications of the Americans with Disabilities Act as well as other Federal and state programs and laws dealing with individuals with developmental disabilities. (II)
4. Identify different teaching and learning modalities for students with developmental disabilities. (III)
5. Demonstrate communication skills appropriate whenever assisting individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. (III)
6. Describe the process of functional assessments. (III)
7. Identify various life quality issues impacted by developmental disabilities. (IV)
8. Describe social and behavioral models for assisting people with developmental disabilities. (IV)
9. Explain differences in expressions, behaviors, and attitudes that commonly impact the social interactions of individuals with developmental disabilities. (IV)
MCCCD Official Course Competencies must be coordinated with the content outline so that each major point in the outline serves one or more competencies.
