Description: Examines the nature and extent of juvenile delinquency to the present. Including but not limited to the history, jurisdictions, terminology, procedures, and institutions of the juvenile justice system.

1. Trace the history of delinquency, and identify and describe past methods of treatment applied to juvenile offenders. (I)
2. Identify and describe the fundamental philosophy and objectives of the modern-day juvenile justice system. (II)
3. Outline and describe the organization of the juvenile justice system, including the court and juvenile court judges. (II)
4. Describe the jurisdiction of the juvenile justice system. (II)
5. Identify and describe the types and categories of juvenile offenders that come under the jurisdiction of the juvenile justice system. (II)
6. Identify and describe the various alternatives available within the juvenile justice system for dealing with juveniles. (II)
7. Identify and describe the distinctions between juvenile and adult law procedures. (III)
8. Describe the law as it relates to the segregation of juveniles from adults in custodial situations. (III)
9. Describe due process for juveniles as it relates to the Gault decision and search and seizure. (III)
10. Identify and describe appropriate police techniques for handling juvenile calls, complaints, and referrals. (IV)
11. Describe detention procedures for juveniles. (V)
12. Identify and describe the adjudication process as it relates to juveniles. (V)
13. Describe the dispositional hearing, and identify and describe the alternatives available to the juvenile court. (V)
14. Identify and describe current issues and problems as they relate to the juvenile justice system. (VI)
15. Describe the role of media/social media as it relates to the juvenile justice system. (VII)
