Description: Intermediate clothing construction techniques. Emphasis on fit and construction details of commercial patterns.



MCCCD Official Course Competencies
1. Operate the sewing machine, serger, and other sewing tools effectively. (I)
2. Use pressing equipment correctly and apply pressing techniques during the construction of garments. (I)
3. Take accurate body measurements to select pattern sizes and styles appropriate for figure type. (II)
4. List information provided on back of the pattern envelope. (II)
5. Use pattern envelope fabric yardage chart to purchase appropriate fabrics for garment styles and sizes. (II)
6. Fit and alter intermediate-level commercial patterns. (II)
7. Measure and pin pattern pieces accurately following guide-sheet diagrams. (II)
8. Cut and mark patterns using a variety of marking methods. (II)
9. Prepare woven fabrics and straighten grainlines for pattern layouts. (II, III)
10. Select compatible interfacings and fashion fabrics for clothing construction projects. (III, IV)
11. Apply fusible and sew-in interfacings to fashion fabrics. (IV)
12. Interpret and follow pattern guide-sheet symbols, diagrams, and instructions accurately to construct intermediate-level garments. (V, VI)
13. Apply clothing construction and pressing techniques to specialty seams, seam finishes, contour darts, collar, zippers, professional hems, and topstitching. (V, VI)
14. Construct blouse/shirt with convertible collar, set-in sleeves, buttons and buttonholes; and skirt/pants with zipper, waistband and topstitching. (VI)
15. Evaluate the construction and fit of garments. (VII)
