Description: Overview of the family as the primary socialization agent of children, the science behind family-based prevention interventions, and the application of such evidence-based approaches to help prevent the onset of substance use in children.

1. Compare and contrast types of families and their connection to various macro and microenvironments. (I)
2. Discuss family practices influencing youth substance use and related problems. (I)
3. Identify principles and key components guiding effective family-based interventions. (II)
4. Discuss evidence-based family interventions for substance abuse prevention. (II)
5. Discuss various family-based prevention programs and their implementation. (II)
6. Describe common barriers and solutions to implementation of effective family-based prevention programs. (II)
7. Discuss reasons for and process of adapting an evidence-based program. (II)
