Description: Patient care technician skills and techniques which include: drawing blood, performing a variety of specimen collections, observing and reporting patient status, assisting in patient preparation and electrode placement for electrocardiograms, suctioning patients, performing urinary catheterizations, documentation and reporting of skill completion, maintaining patient confidentiality, and recognizing legal and ethical commitments related to patient care technician skills.



MCCCD Official Course Competencies
1. Identify principles of medical/surgical asepsis technique. (I)
2. Describe indications for blood glucose monitoring and identify normal and abnormal blood glucose values. (II)
3. Explain and demonstrate techniques for obtaining an accurate blood capillary value. (II)
4. Describe the principles of specimen collection, including procedures, infection control, observation, reporting, documentation, and required equipment. (III)
5. List the indications for suctioning and describe the methods of oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal suctioning. (IV)
6. Describe the methods of urine collection and measurement including the handling of urine specimens. (V)
7. Demonstrate male and female urinary catheterization, and describe the process of catheter selection. (V)
8. List measures to reduce urinary tract infections in catheterized clients. (V)
9. Demonstrate male and female urinary catheterization, and describe the process of catheter selection. (V)
10. List measures to reduce urinary tract infections in catheterized clients. (V)
11. Apply correct sterile technique when performing wound care and dressing changes. (VI)
12. Demonstrate skin preparation and proper electrode placement of ECG leads. (VII)
13. Apply ethical guidelines and legal concepts to clinical behavior. (VIII)
