Description: Principles of periodontology; etiology, microbiology, pathogenesis, classification and characteristics of healthy and diseased periodontal tissues. Surgical treatment of periodontal disease and the effects of dental hygiene therapy, surgical techniques and maintenance therapy. Evaluation of the scientific literature and multi-media resources are used extensively.

MCCCD Official Course Competencies
1. Describe and diagram the histological & anatomical structures of the periodontium and its supporting structures in health and periodontal disease. (I)
2. Describe the microbiological composition and formation of oral biofilms, bacteria, and their roles in the development of periodontal disease. (II)
3. Explain the systemic processes of inflammation, immunity, and host response within the context of total health, including their specific roles in periodontal disease. (III)
4. Compare health vs. disease in the context of the periodontal disease. (IV)
5. Explain the classification system for periodontal and peri-implant diseases and conditions. (V)
6. Assess the etiologic risk factors associated with periodontal disease. (VI)
7. Specify the rationale for non-surgical vs. surgical periodontal therapy. (VII)
8. Describe the acute and pediatric conditions associated with various forms of periodontal disease. (VIII)
9. Explain the role of adjunctive aids in the treatment of periodontal disease. (IX)
10. Explain the link between systemic health and periodontal health. (X)
11. Explain the proper treatment planning sequence necessary for non-surgical and surgical periodontal procedures. (XI)
12. Describe the future management of periodontal disease through diagnostics, genetics, and research. (XII)
MCCCD Official Course Competencies must be coordinated with the content outline so that each major point in the outline serves one or more competencies. MCCCD faculty retains authority in determining the pedagogical approach, methodology, content sequencing, and assessment metrics for student work. Please see individual course syllabi for additional information, including specific course requirements.
