Description: Introduction to preventive aids, agents, and coaching to help patients achieve optimum oral health, reduce incidence of disease, and minimize risk of oral injury. Instills critical thinking in etiologic agents, cariology, fluorides, sealants, nutrition, and their oral and systemic implications.




MCCCD Official Course Competencies
1. Utilize the evidence based decision making model to critically evaluate scientific dental literature related to prevention of dental diseases. (I)
2. Differentiate between dental plaque biofilms, calculus, stains, and saliva and their correlation to oral and systemic diseases. (II)
3. Illustrate phases of the dental caries process. (III)
4. Evaluate individual patient needs and recommend toothbrushes and adjunct aids. (IV)
5. Apply motivational interviewing strategies and interpersonal communication techniques to facilitate individualized behavior change and preventive care plans. (IV)
6. Evaluate individual patient needs and recommend appropriate chemotherapeutic agents. (IV)
7. Differentiate between fluoride types, delivery methods, effects on hard and soft tissues, and indications for use. (IV)
8. Identify indications for the use of pit and fissure sealants. (IV)
9. Identify nicotine cessation interventions and counseling techniques. (IV)
10. Discuss types of oral trauma and injury prevention methods. (IV)
11. Explain the purpose, characteristics and scoring range of oral hygiene indices. (V)
12. Describe the basic principles of human nutrition. (VI)
13. Identify the relationship of nutrition to oral and systemic health throughout the life cycle. (VI)
