Description: Development of clinical skills for venipuncture. Emphasis on review of anatomy and physiology of vasculature of the arm, medical asepsis, and procedure.

2. Utilize principles of medical asepsis when performing venipuncture. (II)
3. Identify the required assessment(s) and principles of the venipuncture procedure. (III)
4. Perform venipuncture and evaluate normal/abnormal values. (IV)

I. Anatomy and physiology of the vasculature of the arm

II. Medical asepsis principles for venipuncture
   A. Hand hygiene best practices
   B. Bloodborne pathogens
III. Venipuncture principles
   A. Required needle gauges/syringe sizes for venipuncture
   B. Vacutainers
   C. Appropriate venipuncture sites
   D. Identification of correct order of draw and tubes for specific blood collection tests
IV. Performance of venipuncture
   A. Placement of the tourniquet
   B. Blood draw by use of a vacutainer
   C. Blood draw by use of a syringe needle
   D. Removal of the tourniquet
   E. Use of techniques to assist clotting at the puncture site
   F. Assessment that bleeding has stopped at the puncture site
   G. Labeling and sending blood sample with lab requisition to laboratory
   H. Charting of procedure performed in the patient`s record
   I. Evaluation of normal/abnormal values
   J. Notification of abnormal values to healthcare provider
