Description: Principles of cardiorespiratory fitness training including evaluation of client needs and health, selection and interpretation of safe and effective assessment techniques and evidence-based program design for healthy and special populations.

MCCCD Official Course Competencies
1. Using participant health/medical history and industry standards for pre-participation health screening, assess and classify participant risk for experiencing an adverse event with participation in physical activity. (I)
2. Demonstrate industry-accepted professional, ethical and business standards for optimizing safety and reducing liability. (I, II, III)
3. Communicate verbally, non-verbally and in writing in an articulate, respectful and culturally competent manner consistent with conventions of the field. (I, II, III)
4. Select evidence-based assessments appropriate to client needs and goals, and to ensure client safety. (II)
5. Conduct evidence-based cardiorespiratory fitness assessments for low to moderate risk populations. (II)
6. Interpret results of cardiorespiratory fitness assessments. (II)
7. Adapt instruction of assessment to client needs and goals, and to ensure client safety (II)
8. Demonstrate and/or explain a variety of generally safe and effective individual and group cardiorespiratory exercises. (II,III)
9. Identify special populations and environments that may require modifications for assessment and programming design. (II, III)
10. Using client goals, medical history and assessment results, design evidence-based cardiorespiratory fitness programs for low to moderate risk populations that achieve desired adaptations. (III)
MCCCD Official Course Competencies must be coordinated with the content outline so that each major point in the outline serves one or more competencies. MCCCD faculty retains authority in determining the pedagogical approach, methodology, content sequencing, and assessment metrics for student work. Please see individual course syllabi for additional information, including specific course requirements.
