Description: Concepts, principles, maintenance, and troubleshooting of mechanical and electro-mechanical devices. Mechanical alignment of shafts, pillow blocks, gears, and couplers on mechanical equipment. Bearings removal and installation. Installation and troubleshooting of pump seals. Vernier calipers, micrometers, tachometers. Use and operation of air flow hoods for air balancing. Belt drive systems and set up and operation of variable frequency drives. Cooling tower water treatment controls and chemical additives

1. Describe the characteristics of spur, bevel, helical, and herringbone gears. (I, III)
2. Use micrometers, vernier calipers and dial indicators to make mechanical measurements. (I)
3. Relate the principle of conservation of energy to the mechanical characteristics of gear and levers. (II)
4. Set up/align a mechanical equipment. (III)
5. Replace mechanical seals related to pump seal problems. (IV)
6. Replace pulleys and drives to achieve proper speed requirements. (V)
7. Use tachometers to measure RPM. (V)
8. Manage gear problems and failures. (VI, VII)
9. Use appropriate lubricants. (VI)
10. Manage bearing failures and problems. (VII)
11. Replace bearing on shaft. (VII)
12. Monitor filter specifications to maintain proper system operation. (VIII)
13. Program variable frequency drives. (IX)
14. Measure air flow from flow hood. (X)
