Description: Introduction to the materials, processes, and sequences used in applying a variety of finishes to various wood types. Includes abrasives, stains, fillers, surface coats, tools and equipment, and basic refinishing techniques.



MCCCD Official Course Competencies
1. Demonstrate the proper preparation of wood prior to the application of a finish. (I)
2. Demonstrate the correct selection, use, and care of application tools including brushes and spray equipment. (I)
3. Demonstrate the correct use of abrasives. (II)
4. Demonstrate the correct selection and application of stains. (III)
5. Demonstrate the correct selection and application of a filler. (IV)
6. Demonstrate the correct selection and application of sealers. (V)
7. Demonstrate the correct selection and application of protective coatings. (VI)
8. Demonstrate the correct rub-out techniques for a clear finish. (VII)
9. Demonstrate the application and rub-out of an enamel finish. (VII)
10. Demonstrate the application of novelty or specialized finishes. (VIII)
11. Use the correct selection of options necessary in the refinishing process. (I-VIII)
