Description: Focus on the practical application of current philosophical theories, methods, and models of assessment and instruction for remediation of reading.



MCCCD Official Course Competencies
1. Apply Reading Specialist skills and strategies in supervised field experience in a K-8 setting. (I)
2. Communicate effectively with general education K-8 teachers and school personnel. (I)
3. Demonstrate leadership skills related to working collaboratively with staff, teachers, and administration. (I-IV)
4. Administer various informal reading assessments to assess K-8 students? reading behaviors. (II)
5. Analyze and interpret the results to determine K-8 students? reading levels, strengths, and weaknesses in print and meaning processing. (III)
6. Design a program based on the K-8 students? identified reading levels, strengths, and weaknesses in print and meaning processing. (III)
7. Write a formal diagnostic report that includes pre-assessment results and a plan for remediation. (III)
8. Implement a plan for remediation/enrichment with the K-8 students. (IV)
9. Analyze and interpret post-assessment results. (IV)
10. Write a formal final report for K-8 students that includes post-assessment results, results of the remediation/enrichment plan, and recommendations for continued remediation. (IV)
MCCCD Official Course Competencies must be coordinated with the content outline so that each major point in the outline serves one or more competencies. MCCCD faculty retains authority in determining the pedagogical approach, methodology, content sequencing, and assessment metrics for student work.
