Description: Veterinary surgical nursing skills associated with aseptic technique and proper protocol in the surgery suite. Pre and post-op monitoring, record keeping, and client education skills. Procedures and techniques with intravenous and inhalation anesthetics, surgical asepsis, skin preparation, instrument sterilization techniques and monitoring veterinary patients for vital signs.

1. Perform proper surgical preparations on animals peri-operatively. (I)
2. Perform as surgical assistant or circulating nurse. (II)
3. Assist with anesthesia of animals under supervision.(III)
4. Monitor anesthetic recovery and provide intensive postoperative care and pain management. (IV)
5. Perform post-surgical clean-up. (V)
6. Remove sutures. (VI)
7. Perform venipuncture for treatment or blood sampling. (VII)
8. Medicate orally. (VIII)
9. Apply and remove bandages and splints. (IX)
10. Place intravenous catheters. (X)
11. Explain care of recumbent patient. (XI)

   E. Prepare gowns, masks, gloves, and drapes
   F. Prepare surgical sites using aseptic techniques
   G. Operate and maintain autoclaves
   H. Provide operating room sanitation and care
   I. Position patients
   J. Secure catheters
II. Perform as Surgical Assistant or Circulating Nurse
   A. Properly pass instruments and supplies
   B. Maintain proper operating room conduct and asepsis
   C. Assist with care of exposed tissues and organs
   D. Keep operative records
   E. Operate and maintain suction and cautery machines
   F. Operate and maintain fiber optic euipment
III. Assist with Anesthesia Under Supervision
   A. Calculate and administer preoperative medications
   B. Induce and maintain general anesthesia
   C. Monitoring the anesthetized patient
   D. Recognize anesthetic emergencies
   E. Care for anesthetic machines
   F. Properly scavenge waste anesthetic gas to protect staff
