Description: Role of surgical technologist in safe handling of drugs according to operating room policies and procedures. Uses and classification of drugs. Federal and state pharmacy regulations applicable to the surgical patient. Complications and safety issues during topical, local anesthesia, antibiotic, diagnostic agent and hemostatic agent administration.

1. Identify specific commonly used pre-operative medications and their use, action, side effects, routes of administration and common dosages. (I)
2. Demonstrate measuring medications while preparing for administration. (I, II)
3. Demonstrate specific types of medications, administration methods, and complications. (II)
4. Assemble hemostatic, local and irrigation solutions for administration on the sterile field. (II)
5. List the agents, action, administration and complications of local hemostatic and irrigation medications. (II)
6. Show application of contrast media and dyes utilizing anesthesia supplies in the operating room. (II)
7. Practice medication management on the sterile field for surgical specialties. (II, III, IV, V)
8. Prepare medications utilizing sterile technique for use on the sterile field. (II, IV)
9. Demonstrate parenteral medication administration. (II, IV, V)
10. Demonstrate the role of responding to medication reactions. (III, V)
11. Demonstrate procedures utilized to promote safety during the administration of medications in the operating room. (IV)
12. Apply safe handling of drugs according to operating room policies and procedures. (IV)
