Guest: President of TOCC Olivia Vanegas-Funcheon (?)

1. Welcome and Introductions: Kozak welcomed the group and asked all to introduce themselves.
2. Statewide Update: Huber presented the statewide update, which included a sidebar from Jacobson on the evaluation of the statewide system by Hezel and Associates, scheduled to be completed on or about May 15.
3. AGEC Updates: Several campuses reported updates to their AGEC requirements. EAC, Pima, TOCC, Coconino, and Yavapai have adopted required changes in the AGEC B and S. Other campuses reported that these changes were in progress. Reisdorfer will check with Fee, Wigal, and Pugliesi about articulating some new interdisciplinary courses at Yavapai with UA, ASU, and NAU. ACTION: Campuses will present brief formal reports on AGEC changes at the next meeting for GEATF endorsement. Under this heading, Keith expressed concern about the tendency toward boutique AGECS or different AGECS for every major. Discussion followed.
4. Reading Requirements: Reisdorfer asked for discussion of reading requirements at the community college campuses. Some campuses have none. Some have a reading test threshold for admission to ENG 101. Others have a graduation requirement.. General discussion of reading requirements ensued.
5. Structure of AGEC-S: ACTION: all community colleges will send Hensley descriptions of how they have structured the AGEC-S. He will compile them and distribute them through the listserv.
6. Kozak presented the report from the AAC&U team with reference to the document that Hensley had sent out, noting that APASC had charged the team to develop a process to advance the project of identifying statewide general education outcomes. A robust discussion of general education issues followed.
7. Lunch: at lunch, we noted that Ron Keith would be retiring and that Kate Dillon Hogan would be leaving MCCCD to work at Grand Canyon University. Both were recognized and thanked for their valuable contributions to the work of the GEATF.
8. Student Learning Outcomes Exercise: Members of the GEATF engaged in an exercise to determine how their current general education outcomes categories aligned with the categories developed by AAC&U, ACTION: In discussion following the exercise, we agreed that the exercise in aligning categories was the first step in taking stock of where we are currently with regard to general education outcomes. The next steps were to a) clarify our objectives in developing common outcomes, b) gather existing definitions and measures relating to our general education categories, and c) assess our alignment with one another and the AAC&U lists. We will send the information of Hensley who will collate it in a table like the one in Section 2 of the Liberal Education Outcomes handout. He will distribute that information by email, and we will discuss it at the next meeting. APASC wants the team to do a report on the project at the transfer conference in Tempe this summer (Mission Palms, July 28-30). The team will do a conference proposal.
9. Minutes of Spring 06 Meeting: the minutes were approved with changes and will be distributed as corrected.
10. The next meeting of the GEATF was set for March 30, 2007, at NAU in Flagstaff, with Pugliesi as host. Agenda items will include continued discussion of AAC&U project, development of the transfer conference presentation and proposal, endorsement of AGEC B and S changes from campuses, and selection of GEATF co-chairs.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:00 pm.

Respectfully Submitted,

David Schwalm, co-chair
