Description: Understanding and interpreting physician`s orders for the Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) and other health care workers. Terminology, symbols and abbreviations for diagnostic procedures and treatments.



MCCCD Official Course Competencies
1. Explain the purpose of the patient chart (electronic and paper-based) including its importance as a legal document. (I)
2. Identify and state the purpose of standard and supplemental chart forms. (I)
3. Describe the processes of preparing and maintaining patients` charts. (I)
4. Describe the classifications and categories of the physician orders. (II)
5. Identify doctors` orders for nursing orders and explain the unit coordinator`s responsibilities for transcription or processing. (III)
6. Identify doctors` orders for nutrition and explain the unit coordinator`s responsibilities for transcription or processing. (IV)
7. Explain the importance of nutritional orders as part of a preparation for diagnostic tests, therapies and surgery. (IV)
8. Given the names, titles of, and abbreviations for specific medications/diagnostic tests/therapeutic services/nursing orders, describe the purpose of these medications, tests, and services and orders. (IV-X)
9. Identify doctors` orders for medications and explain the unit coordinator`s responsibilities for transcription or processing. (V-VI)
10. Explain the role of the HUC in identifying medication names and their classifications when requesting diagnostic tests and therapies from ancillary departments. (V-VI)
11. Identify doctors` orders for diagnostic tests, and explain the unit coordinator`s responsibilities for transcription or processing. (VII-VIII)
12. Describe the role of the HUC for tests that require routine preparations, contrast medium and consent and screening forms. (VII-VIII)
13. Identify doctors` orders for therapies/services to be done by ancillary departments, and explain the unit coordinator`s responsibilities for transcription or processing. (IX-X)
