Description: Designed specifically to acquaint students with safety principles of building construction under the Uniform Building Code, including structural requirements for wood, masonry and concrete, fire resistance of building construction, fire resistant materials, and ratings and occupancy requirements.



MCCCD Official Course Competencies
1. Describe various codes and demonstrate knowledge of their organization by locating specific sections and items. (I)
2. Locate and interpret specific life safety and community welfare regulations within the various buildings codes and justify the need for such regulations. (II)
3. Describe processes, agencies, and professionals involved in securing a building permit through the awarding of a certificate of occupancy. (III)
4. Describe the types of structural loading and typical solutions employed to counteract these loads. (IV)
5. Compare and contrast strengths of wood, steel, and concrete and describe their appropriate structural uses. (IV)
6. Identify soil types and their particular reaction to imposed structural loads. (IV)
7. Identify and describe design limitations and exit requirements based on occupancy groups and construction types. (V)
8. Review plans for compliance to IRC and zoning ordinance. (VI)
