Literacy Outreach Program: tutor training course is being offered as a concurrent college course for high school students, serving to (1) provide support for peer tutors through use of research-based supplemental reading, writing and math materials in targeted student cohorts, including students who have not yet passed AIMS, (2) promote academic skills in reading, writing and math to increase the number of students testing out of developmental courses at the college level, (3) empower high school tutors to successfully engage in a college-level e-Learning course, and (4) recruit high school students into the teaching profession.
This outreach project is designed for replication at other colleges and provides an early intervention to increase the academic skills and mindfulness of service-learning among our incoming freshman. The quality of the program has been established by meeting the criteria for International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC) and the online course template was designed with Quality Matters review standards. Please complete this brief survey related to existing and potential tutoring programs on your campus. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1_Af9mylXfMSsAbqpylR38u3VWamtowMP6cYjmla6sSU/viewform TL3C Project: The Teachers of Language Learners Learning Community (TL3C) Project has two major goals: (1) To increase the pool of effective teachers of language learners and (2) to help support current teachers of language learners in content instruction (STEM). Through this program we have developed two certificate programs for pre-service and in-service teachers that support additional courses in language acquisition and STEM education. We have worked closely with college faculty who will commit to modeling good teaching strategies for our pre-service teachers and meet with the student cohort weekly to provide support and additional training in teacher preparation. In addition, our pre-service teachers serve 10-12 hours each week in a local dual language and high SEI classroom that not only provides hands-on experiences for our pre-service teachers but provides committed assistance for local K-8 teachers. Additional ways local TLLs (teachers of language learners) are supported is through PD, local and national conferences, STEM training, a summer institute, STEM lesson development for language learners and the development of a consortium to support TLLs in Arizona. Curriculum Planning : |
UA- new faculty members in Special Education and Secondary Education, ADE is in the process of changing Special Education requirements for certification, more info within a few months from ADE.
NAU- some community colleges would like to bring ITV option back to community college campuses, especially in rural areas because students are going to ASU, student teaching in that community, then getting jobs there instead of coming back to the smaller communities for employment ASU- Intro to Education is an acceptable substitute for Service Learning course USL 226 (3 credits), two grants have recently been received that would provide scholarships for students in ECE, STEM (secondary ed., middle school) and Special Ed programs. Developed 3 additional majors to meet needs of STEM-only offered at one campus. F13 Educational Studies major (non-certification). There is a teaching certificate that can be added to any major (30-36 credits). The degree may or may not be granted from ASU. Overall Math discussion stemming from ASU change to math requirements: if community colleges change math requirements to reflect ASU, will they be accepted at UA and NAU? Discussions are in progress between ASU, NAU, UA. Math faculty from CCs are invited to meet with ASU math faculty to identify changes to be math. There is a sense of urgency about this math change at the university level. |
